I AM A VOLUNTEER
I am a volunteer for Change 1 Child in New York City. This organizaton is dedicated to facilitating the growth of children in disadvantaged communities through a literacy-based outreach program. We read stories to students (K-3) in outer Brooklyn and conduct discussions, asking the children to relate their own experiences and to think about how the stories apply to their lives. Afterwards, students each choose one book to take home so they can continue this process during non-school hours.
Change 1 Child encourages children to create a love for reading, which will be so important for the educational and emotional growth of children in their earliest academic years. It is truly meaningful to witness students listening carefully and actively participating in discussions that I facilitate.
Working with children in disadvantaged communities, and giving back, challenging myself to create a sense of stability in these children’s lives—all this gives me a great sense of accomplishment and pride. They are so grateful when they receive their books to take home (“To keep forever and ever!” as one of the students put it).
The children’s eyes light up — and they wave in excitement when I walk into their classroom. In unison they ask, “Did you bring us more books?” I believe that this organization has brought a lot of happiness and created a love for reading for many of the students that we’ve reached out to. When the children ask if I can stay and read just one more story, I know that I am doing something truly meaningful.
I walk out of these schools with a broad smile, a love for teaching and the wish to be involved further in their lives.
Indeed, it is my experience with Change 1 Child that has made me want to dedicate myself to working with children on a full time basis.
