Change 1 Child book club

We currently have 350 children in our book Club. These children will be reading for fun for a total of 720 minutes or 12 hours over a 2 months period. We encourage the children to read books that they received from us,books from the library, newspaper and children's magazine. We will reward the children that reach this goal and those that show tremendous improvements in their reading scores during the school year. Please help to Change 1 Child by supporting our reading club.

Hope Project

The Hope Project started in January of 2009 at a public school located outside a housing projects in Brooklyn, NY. A large percentage of the children in this school are coming from low income families. This school is in need of added resources to “level the playing field,” for the children. Each month, we read to 251 children and distribute books to each child.

The book that was read to each class in January was Something Beautiful by Sharon Dennis Wyeth. The main theme was that there is something beautiful about all of us, we just have to find what that something beautiful is. The Hope Project was successful and I look forward to many more rewarding projects.

It was an amazing opportunity to read to a first grade class. The children were excited about getting books of their own to take home. The children in the class were attentive while I read the book “something beautiful,” at the end of the story, a little boy said, “that was a great story, can you stay and read all day.” I assured the children that I will be back next month.

My experience with the “Hope Project” was a wonderful one. The children at the schoolwere excited to have us come in and read to them. Both the students and teachers appreciated the books that were donated. I am proud to be a member of such a positive and promising organization.

It was such a pleasure to meet and read to the first grade class at the school. They were well behaved, listening carefully and overall excited to share their opinions and contributed afterwards during our discussion. They were even more excited when I told them I had books for them to keep and to bring home to read.
As one girl said, “To keep forever, and ever?”
It was so very rewarding and I look forward to meeting with them again next month! This is a fantastic organization!

I volunteered to read to 1st graders for the “Hope Project” (Change 1 Child Organization) and to hand out books to the students. This was a really fun and educational experience. The students were very attentive and listened to the story I was reading. They were eager to know what happened next in the story and I could hear them “awwwwwing” in the most touching parts. I did not expect their wonderful reactions. I immensely enjoyed their participation and comapny. I look forward to participating again in this opportunity next month!

I really enjoyed the kindergarten class that I read to. Not only were the teachers extremely welcoming, the children were adorable, attentive and extremely excited to receive their books. I left the class smiling and I look forward to coming back again. It was truly a lovely experience!
