Change 1 Child book club

We currently have 350 children in our book Club. These children will be reading for fun for a total of 720 minutes or 12 hours over a 2 months period. We encourage the children to read books that they received from us,books from the library, newspaper and children's magazine. We will reward the children that reach this goal and those that show tremendous improvements in their reading scores during the school year. Please help to Change 1 Child by supporting our reading club.

February Hope Project

On February 9, 2009, we returned to our focused school in Brooklyn, NY to conducted our Hope Project. This month we read Beatrice’s Goat. This is a story of a little Ugandan girl who wanted to attend school but could not because her family was not able to afford to pay the school fees to send her to school. The family received a goat and the little girl sold the goat milk. The money that the family earned from selling the goat milk was eventually enough to pay the little girl’s school fees and she was able to attend school. After reading we once again distributed books to each students.

This month I returned to our focus and the children were excited to see me–you can imagine what kind of a good feeling that is.

I read Beatrice’s Goat to the class and the children were attentive and had questions about the story after-wards. When I asked who enjoyed the story, all of their hands went up.

The first grade class was able to follow along and actively participate in the discussion after-wards.

They were very appreciative of the books they received even though some of the boys thought “Care Bears are for girls”. Maybe next month we could provide books more tailored to each gender?

I really look forward to seeing the kids again next month! Thanks for letting me be part of such an amazing program.
